how do you clean a table top fountain with stones in it?

Both the container and stones are covered in scum from the water.

I have had the same problem. I have had to take ot all appart as previous posters suggested, clean it up with Lime Away or CLR (both work fine) and put distilled water with a touch of bleach in it (not much), it keeps the scum form returning. YOu will still have to do this periodically but not so much if you use distilled water with bleach.

I have a unique room on the back of the house I am doing and I want to try to use the guttering system to funnel the water into the room and do something neat with it before having it exit the room . Maybe an indoor waterfall or have it turn a water wheel or something better. Any ideas?

This is probably a really crappy idea but....Somehow, you could get the water to flow down a pane of glass, and either have a picture, painting or a light that changes colours (maybe, maybe a bit tacky) behind it?
If you could sculpture something made of small glass jars, you could put clothing dye or paint pigment in the bottom of each, so that when they fill up, each jar is a different colour? What I'm imagining is a thin, tree-like wrought iron sculpture with the jars attached to it in different places.
Also, I think it would be nice to simply have the water flow into a stone bowl that has those floating glass balls from Ikea (I think) in it, or floating candles. Maybe a bit feminine.

The fountain was installed as part of original construction in 1978. We recently tore out all surrounding tile and the fountain broke in several pieces, it may be able to be refurbished if anyone is any suggestions in the Dallas, TX area. The pump is built into the fountain floor, so I don't have the ability to use a fountain with a pump. Thanks!!

where is this fountain located? if it is somehere where a sink or something is applicable, you might consider keeping the plumbing as is and then putting something in a bit more modern.
